This was a dream of mine for years. I thought if pedaling an airplane was not possible maybe this would be an acceptable possible second.

This is not too far from what I had imagined would work. My brother, an aero-engineer suggested (as best I recall while writing this) a 13ft diameter, 65ft teardrop shape with enough gas to descend only 2 ft/second with a pilot and winglets to give it the lift to gain altitude when moving forward. That dream was about 25 years ago. Time flies...
